After the release of any book all authors will be on an excited high and then, as the title of my blog goes, it feels as if you are Always-hanging-around until the first reviews start to filter through. Then the questions start bounce around your mind while you wait. Will people like your story? Will the reader see the same picture you first saw in your own head and tried so hard to transfer onto paper through the use of words? The first reviews for Daniel Jones Doom are now coming through and below is the first from America. Joseph Spuckler is a highly regarded review in the U.S and probably one of the most honoust with his views. So below is what he thinks about the sequel to Frenzy a Daniel Jones story and now you have the chance to see it too. Unlike some authors who have very large multi-national publishing companies with the financial fire power behind them to pay for reviews; this is not the case with me and what follows by the Evilcyclist is as pure as the day is long.

Book Review: Daniel Jones Doom

Daniel Jones Doom by Mark King
It is not odd to remember a book’s storyline after two years. It is also not that odd to remember a book in the context of what was going on at the time when you read it. I do think it is a bit unusual when a book takes priority over scheduled events that you have been looking forward to. I was really looking forward to seeing Rickie Lee Jones in Dallas. She has been a favorite singer of mine, but life events and the military kept me from catching even one of her shows. I finally had a chance to see her in Dallas. At the time, I also received a copy of Frenzy: A Daniel Jones Story to review. I started the book a few hours before catching the train. Read it on the train. Read it at the venue before the concert. Regretted when the lights went down and the show started. Read it on the train home, and finished it late that evening. It was that kind of book.
I was happily surprised to hear from Mark King just over a week ago that he had the second book in the series ready and would like to send me one of the first copies. Daniel Jones: Doom arrived a week later and it had a lot to live up to. Mark King is a private man aside from mentions of traveling, his blog, and living in Norwich, he is pretty quiet about himself. From the information on the cover flap, it looks like Frenzydid pretty well.
I gave up fantasy and science-fiction/fantasy a while ago and read mostly non-fiction. When I tried to pick up a book in the genre its been difficult to want to read through it. I read many of these books in the early 1980s but since then, it has been hard to find a match for me. The Daniel Jones series, however, seemed to hit the spot perfectly. I gave the first book five stars which is really unusual for me to award to contemporary fiction. The characters seemed to be just right. There was a mix of experience, youth, recklessness, and caution among the characters on the side of good. Evil held that relentless drive that made them believable and hated; there was little in the way of their weakness. There was hope, blind hope, the darker side of human nature, and a sense of community mixed into the story in a near perfect ratio.
Doom picks up after Frenzy ends with very little time passing. It keeps to the formula set in Frenzy with the same characters, with a few minor additions. The story now lets on a bit more about the characters and exposes new and perhaps unexpected connections between the core characters. The new revelations work well in the story and are not forced to make the plot work. They blend well together.
Although not much time has passed for the characters between books, plenty of time has passed for the reader. It has been eighteen months and more than two hundred books ago since I read FrenzyDoom very gently reminds the reader of the events in the past book while progressing in the new story. I couldn’t quite place the character Wolf in the story, I knew who he was, but had forgotten exactly what his role was in the first book. The character’s past from Frenzy was reintroduced in Doom by his rival piecing together Wolf’s past while plotting against him. Cleverly done, and very effective. The important parts of the past are recounted in a non-intrusive way and eliminated my need to go back to the first book and use it as a reference.
The story is well done. The plot flows smoothly and moves at a quick pace. The events in the story are all plausible if you buy into the overall premise of aliens occupying the earth — it is science fiction, after all. The actions of the aliens are really no different than any occupying force in history. Maintain dominance, recruit help from the local population, remove methods of resistance– like weapons, organization, and printed communication. Like pacified populations, most people conform, especially decades after the occupation. A few fight and use their differences to build a strong team. Doom is a sequel that fully lives up to the original book. It is part of the plan and not an afterthought. Like the first book Doom brings closure to the immediate storyline but leaves it room for continuation. A very enjoyable read and well worth the effort. Great science fiction.

As I wrote in a previous posting the school half-term is upon me already. We just seem to have got Christmas out the way and, bang, the little ones are once again at home on leave. You could call it an advantage to be able to work from home or you could see it as a disadvantage when the children are snapping at your ankles to keep them occupied. I always have plans to complete interviews etc during this period, but this soon goes out the window. You just can't help but get involved with them. On Monday they were at the cinema. On Tuesday the whole family went swimming and on Wednesday I took them over to Lowestoft to see one of their nannies were they got lots of tweets like sweets, ice-cream, etc.

I did manage to get a days worth of work out of the week for my two books FRENZY a Daniel Jones Story and the new sequel Daniel Jones Doom. I was interviewed by a web-site for readers and authors called Awesomegang.com and below is the end result. So take a few minutes out to read and enjoy.

The sniffles

Everyone will experience colds, bugs or flu during the year if you have a young family. No matter how hard you try to keep yourself from catching such things, and suffering the miserable effects they bring, you still end up with a sore nose, throat or muscles. You can teach your children to wash their hands, and to be as conscious as possible about germs, but you can’t count on other parents being so careful with their little ones. This means you are guaranteed children will come home from school soon after the holidays with the sniffles and then you know worse is on the way. I think teachers must have an immune system that is extra resilient because if they didn’t they would be constantly on the sick list.

So far since the return to school after the Christmas holiday the family haven’t suffered too much, until now that is! The dear wife has been feeling very ruff with a stinker of a cold, and as I write this article my throat has the dry feeling that can sometimes foretell that worse is to come. By the time you read this article I may well be suffering too.

With any bug you never know how bad it’s going to be. It can be just a few days of feeling under the weather, or it could be something that seems to takes weeks to get over. And you are normally powerless to do anything to improve your situation once you feel sick other than to stock up on cough medication, and mediated hot drinks, and hope for the best.In the end if all we have to put up with is the odd cold and nothing more, I count it as a blessing because many people in the world have to go through a lot more dreadful things in their lives.

It can be easy to feel sorry for yourself when your under the weather, or if things aren't going your way. It's times like this when you can blame others. You feel grouchy, down in the dumps and you want to cheer yourself up by pushing your pain onto someone else or something else. The best way to lift the spirit is not to blame, but to open your eyes to those around you that are helping you in your time of need. To the person who makes you a soothing hot medicated drink while you're curled up on the sofa. The person who comes round to check you are o.k, or the person who is there to listen to you while you get off your chest the daily tribulations of life.

Open your eyes, see the truth and be grateful. life will then become more positive for you.

Regards

Mark

MARK KING ~ REVENGE?

Mark King
Mark King
My name is Mark King the author of FRENZY: A Daniel Jones Storyand its sequel Daniel Jones DOOM, which are now available for sale around the world. I’m also the writer behind the successful worldwide blog Always hanging around.
My varied working life has taken me from an auctioneer to a Court bailiff and then finally to an area operations manager, plus other positions in-between. It has given me a rich tapestry of experiences that has helped feed my imagination, which is now used in my creative work as a successfully published author.
One of the big spurs for my writing career was the death of my father-in-law. I’ve started writing stories over the years, but never got passed the second chapter, as the daily tribulations of life requiring my attention took priority. So, my scribbles would end up in a drawer waiting for the day when I had time to finish them.  It was after this heart breaking event that I realized you can never guarantee tomorrow will arrive. I made the decision to resign from my secure job during the biggest world recession in living memory to concentrate purely on writing. Two years later, I published my first book, FRENZY: A Daniel Jones Story.
I’m now working on the third book in the series, which at the moment I have titled REVENGE, although I’m still toiling with various different options. I’m going to see how the book pans out as I write the manuscript, before I decide on the final title.
The best advice I can give is to be prepared for disappointment. It starts from the beginning and will carry on throughout your career. It’s doesn’t matter what field your artistic talent lies. Don’t be surprised when you receive your first rejection. Even when you have finally get published, be prepared for strangers and reviewers to slate off not only your book, but you yourself, even though you have never met this person.
Never give up. Keep going, especially if you have made the commitment and have the belief in yourself.
The final bit of advice is to be prepared to listen to what people have to say. If you do, you have a good chance of making it. You have to take a positive look at every failure. See each one as a learning experience and think how you would work differently next time.
